73. Amazing. And the Workout!

The Golden State Warriors beat the Memphis Grizzlies tonight to win their 73rd game this season. They broke a long held record by the 1996 Chicago Bulls that included the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan. Lots of people talk about these Warriors... "They won the title last year because the teams they played in the playoffs were all injury plagued..." or "Well if Curry played back in Jordan's day... blah blah blah..." The fact is that 73 wins in a season is amazing and the only ones that seem like they may be able to do it again in the not so distant future are.... the Warriors.

Warm-Up: One minute of rope whips followed by 1 minute rest to complete a set. Four sets total.
Heavy Rope Whip

Husky Ridiculousness and the Workout

I have been watching the Men's NCAA tournament and the games have been unbelievably close. A game between say a number one seeded team versus a number five seeded team have been going down to the wire... often times with a buzzer beating basket. Then there is the Women's NCAA Tournament. I just dropped in on the UCONN Huskies versus the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Now a real bulldog may put up a good fight against a real husky.... but this basketball game got out of hand quickly.... 61-12 at the half?!

Made it to the Thanksgiving Break and the Workout of the Day!!

I really do love Thanksgiving. I know that history has started to show that we put a little bit more into the holiday than the pilgrims actually did.... but hey they were just happy to survive! Certainly our meal will be much more lavish than whatever game they scared up to put on the table and a pile of root vegetables! The thing I like most about it is this: If I cannot be with my actual family than I am glad to be here with my friends and co-workers at NOLS Southwest. There really are no better, hard working people I know. Tomorrow will be a day off from the weights but, but I will do some sort of cardio work. In the mean time I will think of a list of things to be thankful for!

Indoors a Couple Days of the Year. This Time for Shoulders and Triceps!

It can be a love/hate relationship with the monsoon here in Tucson. Mostly it is love. It is hard to argue with the life giving rain that everything depends on for the rest of the year. It is also incredibly beautiful to watch large storms roll in when you live in big sky country. It is only a couple of times per year that I cannot use the outdoor gym that I have set up here and it seems like today is one of them. Today will be focused on dumbbell work, bodyweight exercises and a bout on the rowing machine. Inside.

Today's quote is from Langston Hughes:

"Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby."

Workout: Shoulders and Triceps

Things are Getting Ridiculous, Shoulders and Triceps

Religious fanaticism meets boneheads in Texas?! I am not saying that it is right by any means, but is anyone in the world surprised that some folks showed up to shoot up the "Draw the Prophet Muhammad" contest outside of Dallas? Drawing the Prophet Muhammad is considered blasphemy in Islam, so some ass hat thought it would be a good idea to hold a contest doing just that at a COMMUNITY CENTER in Garland, Texas? You can't make this stuff up. It would be funny if folks didn't have to DIE because of the stupidity and bigotry?! Some genius journalist called the contest "controversial". No kidding.

Today's quote is from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar:

"I've always tried to stay out of the fray and not be an object of controversy."

Beer is Good, Shoulders and Triceps

It is fantastic that I live in a community where people are very creative and overachieving. There is a NOLS and WMI instructor here that among all of his other talents has decided that in the future he would like to start a brewery: High Alpine Brewing. He will brew a new recipe and we will get an inexpensive growler of tasty beer. The bonus is also that we know exactly what has gone into the making of the beer and we are supporting a guy that is learning and building for his future career. Win win.

Today's quote is from Plato:

"He was a wise man who invented beer."

It is Amazing How Productive You Can Be at 4am?! Shoulders and Triceps

Rebecca's surgical rotation of medical school has been a double edged sword. The 4am wake-up is a bit painful but I am a person that once I am up... there is no going back to sleep. I get the chance to get up, send her on her way, catch the LA SportsCenter crew (Love Stan and Neil...) and hammer out the daily workout blog. No one in their right mind is awake yet, so I have the place to myself.

Today's quote is from William Feather:

"Early morning cheerfulness can be extremely obnoxious."

NFL Mourning, Shoulders and Triceps

Today is a day that I dread a little bit each year: The day that the NFL season ends. It has been an incredibly bad year for the NFL between the domestic abuse involving Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, Colts owner Jim Irsay getting busted with a bag full of prescription drugs in his car, owner Dan Snyder and the Redskins' racist name that he refuses to change and of course Deflate-Gate. Still, after all of that crap... I will miss the NFL. At least 'til August when it starts all over again.

Today's quote is from Superbowl XLIX MVP Tom Brady:

"Football is unconditional love."

Workout: Shoulders and Triceps
Warm-Up: Perform each exercise in order for one minute to complete a set. Three sets total. No rest.

Jury Duty, Shoulders and Triceps

Ah, jury duty. I got a summons to report tomorrow and looked tonight to see when I am supposed to be at the courthouse in the morning and I found that I have been rescheduled. I have been rescheduled for February 10th when I will be on contract to go paddle on the Rio Grande in southwest Texas until March 2nd. I have petitioned to be rescheduled or excused, but I have a funny feeling that I am going to get an unsympathetic e-mail response tomorrow. I am happy to serve on jury duty but not at the cost of missing a contract that represents 10% of my annual income. Unfortunately, $12.00 a day plus mileage will not make up for that either.

Today's quote is from Dave Barry:

"We operate under a jury system in this country, and as much as we complain about it, we have to admit that we know of no better system, except possibly flipping a coin."

Workout: Shoulders and Triceps

Another Rainy Day in the Desert

It was another "cold" rainy "winter" day here in Tucson. I have to add the quotation marks when I use those words or I will hear it from all of the folks out there that are actually suffering through winter with real cold weather. Life is Tough for a Desert Dog, Shoulders and Triceps

It has rained everyday in the Washington DC area since we arrived three days ago. It doesn't really bother me that much, but when you are a desert dog it isn't easy. We found Ocho in the desert and he has lived in the desert for all of his life. We do make forays to other climates like our holidays in DC, but for the most part he has been used to the desert. When most of your day is spent laying in the driveway, watching for intruders and enjoying 350 days of sun a year, three days of rain is a big deal. It will be nice when the Och can get even a glimpse of the sun again.

Today's quote is from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

"Into each life some rain must fall."

Workout: Shoulders and Triceps
Warm-Up:
Shoulder Circles, 30 repetitions in each direction out to the side, in front and overhead

Halloween, Shoulders and Triceps

Apparently the history of Halloween dates back to the Celts. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of winter. This day is when the Celtic people celebrated Samhain, the day when the line between the land of the living and the land of the dead was blurred. The people would light large bonfires and dress in costume to ward off ghosts.

Today's quote is from Dan Aykroyd:

"Have I ever personally seen a ghost? Not one."
