We all had the day off from work today so a lot happened. We started with a nice hike at Stringer's Ridge on the Hill City Trail to the Strut Trail. It was only three miles but lots of hills got the old dogs huffing and puffing. We ran around doing errands after that and got very tasty burgers at Slick's. We wrapped up the day with a great workout, some wonderful spicy pork chops with tomatillo salsa and then listened to the Nationals versus Reds on the radio. What a great day?!

Jefferson Davis' Descendant Brings Down the Confederate Flag, Chest and Biceps Workout
South Carolina Republican Representative Jenny Horne got really upset. After the racially motivated mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina a ground swell of emotion, energy and support formed to get the Confederate Battle Flag removed from the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse. But, a small group of Republican lawmakers used the argument that the flag did not represent hate, that it represented their heritage and they were fighting the removal of the flag. Jenny Horne was over it. "I have heard enough about heritage, I am a descendant of Jefferson Davis, Okay? But that does not matter. It's not about Jenny Horne. It's about the people of South Carolina who have demanded that this symbol of hate come off of the Statehouse grounds." Among the nine people killed in the shooting rampage was State Senator Clementa Pinckney, a colleague and friend of Jenny Horne's. Tearfully Horne continued. "I cannot believe that we do not have the heart in this body to do something meaningful such as take a symbol of hate off these grounds on Friday! For the widow of Senator Pinckney and his two young daughters, that would be adding insult to injury and I will not be a part of it!"
This morning, the Confederate Battle Flag was removed from the South Carolina Statehouse grounds and placed in a museum. Well done Jenny Horne. Rarely in this day and age do we see politicians do things simply because they are the right thing to do.

Back to Strength Training, Mixing it Up Again and Jury Duty?!
I have no idea what tomorrow is going to look like as far as working out goes: I have to report for jury duty?! Today however, I am going to go back to working in a rotational strength based workout with cardiorespiratory interval training on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. My plan is to have 6-7 main exercises that I will do for each body part and then mix in various different exercises each day to keep it from getting boring.

Young Men Doing the Right Thing, Chest and Biceps
The sports news today is splattered with Jordan Spieth crushing the Master's course at Augusta and winning the Green Jacket at 21 years old. A guy who doesn't drop F-bombs when he screws up a shot but rather sincerely says things like, "Gosh darn it". It seems that maybe the next battle in golf will be Rory vs. Jordan.
However, also in the news is Johnny Manziel coming out of a long stint in rehab. A guy that when he left, it was all about him. I am hoping that after being in a detox facility, he has realized that as a NFL quarterback he has a lot of other people counting on him. And not just the players... the Cleveland fans and community. It will be interesting to see what happens to "Johnny Football" this season.
Today's quote is from Charlie Sheen:
"Slash sat me down at his house and said, You've got to clean up your act. You know you've gone too far when Slash is saying, Look, you've got to get into rehab."
Warm-Up: Perform each exercise for one minute.

Getting Excited for the Field, Chest and Biceps
I am continuing to move toward getting ready to go into the field as part of the river instructor team for the Spring Semester in the Southwest. I am trying to wrap up all of my in-town work in preparation for the three week field contract. Having a job that is mostly in-town and part-time field instructor is a nice balance. Right now I am excited to go to the field again.Today there were three of us for the evening workout, so we did a heavy lifting session for the chest, biceps and forearms. There were not a lot of exercises, but they were each pretty strenuous.
Today's quote is from Cate Blanchett:
"If I had my way, if I was lucky enough, if I could be on the brink my entire life - that great sense of expectation and excitement without the disappointment - that would be the perfect state."

All-Natural Sunscreen, Chest and Biceps
I am going into NOLS "field mode" which includes thinking about being in the sun of southwest Texas all day long for a few weeks straight. To combat the sun in the desert there are two options: Wear very little clothes and LOTS of sunscreen or cover up completely from the sun and wear very little sunscreen. I go with the latter: Long sleeve shirt, long pants, cotton gardening gloves, wide brim hat, sunglasses and then my real secret weapon.... my beard. I grow it as long as possible to cover as much of my face as it can. When it is all said and done I use a lot of sunscreen on the tip of my nose and cheeks.Today's quote is from John Hodgman:
"First of all, I wish I could grow a beard."

Sympathies to the East Coast, Chest and Biceps
Tonight I am sending out much love and support to the folks on the east coast that are about to get blown up by a winter storm. It is a bit frightening when the Mayor of New York City says that it may be the worst snow storm to hit the city... EVER?! I have no complaints out here in the desert. I hope folks just hunker down and wait out the storm in safety.
Today's quote is from Shalom Harlow:
"My favorite New York memory is that blizzard in '96. I get chills thinking about it. It's my favorite time here - call me crazy. I'm from Canada, and it's very cold up there."
Today we did a brief warm-up followed by one very light bench set and then went for a one repetition maximum press. The last three sets were of 6-8 repetitions.
