Been a Few Days and Bartolo Colon

It has been a few days since I have posted and I have been a bit busy, One of the things that we did in the last few days was go to see the Washington Nationals versus the Atlanta Braves. I walked away from that game feeling like Bartolo Colon gives all middle aged men hope. The 43 year old MLB pitcher is LISTED at 5'11", 280 lbs. and he schooled the vaunted Nationals batters! Though I am a Nats fan, I have to tip my cap to Colon!

RIP Garv-Missile and the Workouts from Friday and Saturday

Today I received a message that our friend's dog Garvey passed away. I called him "The Garv-Missile" because he would come launching out of her house to play with us and our dog Ocho.... running around like a maniac. Garvey was a happy, gentle soul. The only flaw I have ever found with dogs is that they weasel their way into our hearts, die way too soon and leave a gaping whole where their unconditional love used to be. RIP Garv-Missile.

International Women's Day and the Workout

I wore red to work yesterday in recognition of International Women.s Day. By far the most influential people in my life have been women.... Ticking off the best supervisors I have had in my professional life, the top three are all women. Far and away the two people that impacted my life the most are my stepmother Lynn and my friend's mother Dorothy. Brilliant, hardworking, honest and accepting only the highest of standards. A woman at work when I told her that I wanted to recognize her on International Women's Day said "Every day should be International Women's Day..." which I agreed with. My response though was, "That is true. But when we don't take time every day to recognize the people that deserve it, we need to take a day to make that happen."

Walking it Off and Back at the Weights

Today I warmed up by going for our typical one mile dog walk.... going up our normal steep hill felt good on my still weary legs.... it was going down that really woke me up. Still a little tender going down hill.

I was able to hop into the garage gym and do a good upper body workout. Now that the marathon is done I am going back to weight training and will throw in cardio training three days a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday will continue to be Olympic lifting. Because those workouts will mostly focus on a lot of leg drive, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday will be "Feel good about myself..." chest and arms work.

Tennessee Snowpocalypse, More Visitors and a Classic Dumbbell Workout!!

Yesterday it was very cold here (Well, cold for Chattanooga?!) and it actually snowed overnight. Chattanooga area schools were closed before the first snowflake even flew?! This morning we woke up to a cold, crisp day with a dusting of snow on the ground. We also had a good friend fly in from Arizona last night and her flight was delayed for de-icing at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport for almost two hours. It threw a bit of a wrench in the typical workout schedule. Today will just be a classic upper body dumbbell workout. The point will be to avoid leg work today since tomorrow will be a long marathon training day.

New Year: Take It Easy and the Workout

So many folks make the New Year's resolution to lose weight or become more fit. These are really admirable goals and I definitely saw some new faces at the Crossfit class this evening at the gym. It is however very important to take it easy when starting an exercise routine and some folks may need to check with their doctor first. One of the main reasons people do not follow through with exercise goals is because they start with exercise classes or programs that are too intense. If you have been sedentary or are just getting back to exercising.... ease into it and slowly increase the intensity.

Friday Rest and Saturday Back to Olympic Lifting

Yesterday was a wonderful day. It was a scheduled rest day from running and the gym and we decided to go to a movie, something we have not done for a long time. It is a rare thing for me to go to a movie and leave feeling like I have actually gotten my money's worth. We saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and we loved it! Chattanooga Mending and the Workout

Chattanooga is still recovering from a tragedy that occurred on Monday. A school bus with thirty-five elementary school children on board rolled over killing five children and leaving many injured in the hospital. Immediately after the accident,  the line at Blood Assurance downtown to donate blood was out the door and around the corner of the building. I cannot imagine the pain of the five families who have lost their children.... but I am confident the City of Chattanooga will do all it can to support them in their time of need.

The Crud is on the Run and the Workout

I woke at 1:55am to get ready for work and felt a hell of a lot better than I expected. Resting on Sunday and not running was a good move. I was ready to get to work and I was able to get into the gym and lift today. I am hoping that Thursday will include a 10 mile run. My mental attitude was also given a boost with the Redskins putting a whooping on the Packers who eliminated the Skins from the playoffs last year. Now all we will need is a Thanksgiving day miracle against the Cowboys who look like they are on their way to the Superbowl?!

These Dogs Hate the 4th of July and the Workout

I am very excited for the long weekend after a week of early wake-ups to work at the UPS facility. I love the 4th of July. I especially like the reading of the Declaration of Independence on NPR stations on the holiday. The 4th of July is also my mother-in-law's birthday. The only thing that sucks about Independence Day as far as I am concerned is the fact that my two little Australian Cattle Dogs think all of the firework activity is incoming fire from some unseen enemy that is trying to take them out! As I was typing this, some early bird patriot set off a large device and both dogs came diving for cover in the bunker between the coffee table and sofa! Good luck boys.
