An amazing part of of the Kennedy-Shriver legacy is the Special Olympics. Eunice Kennedy Shriver saw how people with developmental disabilities were excluded and marginalized in our society and in the 1950s and 1960s she started Camp Shriver in her backyard for these people. Because Eunice had been a collegiate athlete she knew that sports and play had a great ability to unite people. Finally, with Shriver's passion driving the vision, the first International Special Olympics were held for people with developmental disabilities in 1968. These athletes compete as hard as anyone in professional or collegiate sports but not for the money.... but for the pure love of sport.
Today's quote is the Motto of the Special Olympics:
"Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
